Description and Comments:   Front is inscribed "BIL ST UM PSHI SM ARK" (BILL STUMPS HIS MARK), based on Charles Dickens Peckwick Papers, Chapter XI published in 1837.  The dies for this safe were registered to J. W. Evans, tool & die maker, who probably stamped the pieces. The match safe was made (assembled) by Levi & Salamon.  Other examples of the identical match safe can be found with different maker marks and in different materials.  See the International Match Safe Association's July 1, 1999, newsletter for more details.
