Description and Comments:   The Wetherill & Brother white lead manufactory & chemical works had its beginnings during or before the American Revolution.  The litograph inset on the factory image shows how the factory appeared from 1808 to 1848. (This lithograph resides in the Wainwright Lithograph Collection of the Library Company of Philadelphia.) The factory was situated on the corner of 12th & Cherry Streets in Philadelphia. It is said, the maufacture of white lead was introduced into the United States by the Wetherill family.  Around 1850, they employed a steam engine of eighty horsepower, and comsumed 18,000 lbs of pig lead daily.
